The International Wolf Center gathers wolf information from
researchers and experts around the world. For members of the media,
the Center is the place to start with inquiries on wolf information and issues.
On a wooded hillside outside Ely, MN, sits a gray building
with triangular windows that glow at night like the slanted eyes
of wolves. While its architecture is lupine, International Wolf Center exhibits are world-class people-magnets.
About 45,000 visitors a year watch the
resident
pack of wolves feed, fight and play outside the Center's
cathedral windows. Children clamber through the Little Wolf
Exhibit's replica of a wolf den. School groups camp overnight
at the Center, then hike or snow shoe and learn how biologists
track wolves with radio telemetry. Adults can take part in
Learning Vacations
and do a week-long intensive study or travel with wolf experts
to Yellowstone or Isle Royale.
About 9,000 members learn from
International Wolf magazine about populations of wolves,
their need for wild lands and about wolf-human conflicts. The
non-profit Center's photo-rich Web site at www.wolf.org attracts
250,000 visitors a month.
Smithsonian Magazine and the United States Tour Operators
Association's (USTOA) Travelers Conservation Foundation recognized
the Center's commitment to teach the world about wolves with their
first annual
Conservation Award in 2002.
The International Wolf Center's
mission is to advance the survival of wolf populations by
teaching about wolves, their relationship to wild lands and the
human role in their future.
The non-profit center provides current factual information
to educators, students, media, legislators, policy makers and
the public. Through education,
it promotes healthy dialogue and decision-making about wolves
and the environment.
The International Wolf Center has a
rich history; incorporated in 1985, our education flagship
facility in Ely, MN, opened in 1993. We maintain membership,
development, communications and magazine functions in our
Minneapolis office.
